Doppleganger instruction

Objective of the tool/method This is a special interview through which we can keep traces in the form of written notes and audio and/or video recordings. The instructor can also produce diagrams and/or produce any types of documents which may help understanding of the activity. He/she can also mime or demonstrate a technical gesture.
Description of the tool This is a co-analysis procedure during which a professional (= the instructor) is confronted with a simple and open question concerning his/her activity. For example: “//imagine that you cannot go to work tomorrow and I have to replace you. Explain to me what I have to do so that nobody realises that you are away//...”. This process implies the adoption of positions from the parties present at the interview: - **the instructor (the professional) **is invited to analyse his/her own activity, to take a step back in order to identify and communicate the different professional gestures required by describing them as precisely as possible; - **the doppelganger (interviewer)** is also invited to analyse the activity and, having to play the role as precisely as possible for the next day, has to ask questions in order to understand the different professional gestures described. During this interview, the idea is not only to draw up a list of tasks to be carried out, which can be seen in the job description and procedure guide. The interest in this interview technique is that in playing the role of the doppelganger the interviewer will question the real activity carried out by the professional. The product of the interview is therefore less based on “//how should the job be carried out ?//” than on “//how do you do this job ?//”.

Succes factor The environment of the interview is important. It must provide a guarantee of intimacy between the instructor and the doppelganger in order to preserve confidentiality around the exchanges. Similarly, optimal conditions of exchange are achieved by adopting a positive and construction position by the interviewer. The interview must focus on the “how” of the activity rather than the “why”. The instructor must take an informal stance when replying; He/she has to project into the near future (tomorrow), a past situation that he/she has already experienced; The aim is to evoke the real activity (what you do not do, what one cannot manage to do, what one would like to or could do, what barriers are present and what one refrains from doing) with regards to the activity in question.
Challenges The main difficulty in the use of this tool lies in the care required by the interviewer to enable the instructor to provide detailed information on the activity in a real, contextualised situation while avoiding the trap of information that is too wide reaching such as “you must…”, “you simply have to…”. It is important to remain as close as possible to the real operational situations, reminding the instructor of this from time to time, if necessary.
